I love visiting and capturing high-alpine lake scenes—and what better time than the first snow? Summit Lake near the top of Loveland Pass looks ominous here, as though it knows the change is coming. I love how the weather conditions develop from one side of this panorama to the other. A light dusting of snow from the night before sugarcoats the higher elevations in this colorful and dramatic mountain scene. I can almost still smell the first notes of winter’s woodsy scent as I stare into this rugged natural amphitheater.
