The Bay Bridge has two spans, the Oakland approach and the San Francisco approach, shown here. Both approaches connect the side of the bay for which they are named with Yerba Buena Island, which sits in the middle of the Bay. Although a somewhat popular spot among local photographers, my research of this location did not inform me that getting to this vantage point would require entering a USCG base, parking in their employee parking lot, and crawling through a small hole in the fence surrounding the base. Having traveled a long way to take this shot, I figured I’d stick it out until I was, at the very least, politely asked to leave. As a matter of fact, I was never here, and this photograph doesn’t actually exist.
